The 3 Donts of How to Hang Artwork

90% of all artwork is made to be displayed. It's the artists vision in it's completed form, and should be appreciated as such. But there are some common mistakes people make when hanging artwork, that range from extremely minor, to potentially extremely dangerous. So here are 3 helpful tips for you to keep in mind before you start setting up you display of artwork.

Spacing is Crucial

It is ok for some of your pieces to have frames, and some to have none. It's even ok to have artwork that is different in tone within the same grouping. This is all very subjective. But be mindful of how you arrange your artwork. Let's say you have a small, unframed piece. You won't want to hang artwork on a large, blank wall. It will look entirely out of place. Instead, you might consider adding a matte to the artwork, and finding a small space to hang it. This is all in the vein of keeping things in balance.

Avoid Clutter

Don't be afraid to stagger your artwork, to offset it a bit. Too many times have I seen people have everything perfectly level all the way across. Sure, this can be nice and easy, but can be unappealing to the eye. The biggest “balance” issue that can be unappealing to the eye is overdoing it. This means, cramming as many pieces as you possibly can onto one single surface. Some might see it as a crafty use of space. But it will be so hard on the eyes, it will take away from the individuality of each separate piece in the end.

Don’t Get Sunburned

This is more of a tip to help keep your artwork in the proper condition. If you have a priceless heirloom, that's painted on canvas, you want to make sure that you hang the piece somewhere well it won't be hit by sunlight. This is the reason museums are very dark, and for the most part, don't have a lot of windows. The UV rays will fade and damage your painting slowly over time. This is something that would be tragic to have happen. Along these same lines, you don't want to hang canvas paintings near any shelf where you might have candles placed. Most artwork is extremely flammable, and will go up in a moments notice. So please be wary where you hang them.
