History of Buffalo Bill

When it comes to American history, there are many names that are mentioned that 90% of all Americans will recognize immediately upon hearing them. Buffalo Bill just happens to be one of them. When it comes to figures from this time in history, it can be sometimes difficult to separate the fact from fiction. One thing you can be assured of is the fact that William Cody “Buffalo Bill” was a real person who played a huge role in how the Wild West was viewed in the eyes of people who may not have been there.

William Cody was primarily an American scout, as well as a bison hunter and showman. Being a showman is probably what he is most notable for amongst the general public, but his other claims to fame are equally important. Shortly after his father’s death, Cody began his working career at the young age of 11. Then by the time Cody was 14, he was a rider for the Pony express.

At the start of the American Civil War, he went to the Union Army to enlist, but was turned away due to his young age. With his inability to serve directly with the Union Army at this time, Cody found other ways to work with the Union Army. During this time frame, Cody fell in love, got married and had a few children. When he came of age, he re-enlisted and became a scout for the Army. Along with being involved in many battles, Cody also hunter bison to supply the Army and surrounding territories. This is where he got his legendary nickname from.

After the Civil War ended, Cody took what his knowledge and experience with the Wild West on small tours in cities around America. This is what would later be called The Buffalo Bill West West Show. These tours would include other legendary names of the Wild West such as Texas Jack Omohundro and Wild Bill Hickok. They would recreate battles of the war itself, as well as simulated stories of life in the wild west. The show itself toured for around a decade, and even made its way to Europe a few times between the years of 1887-1906.

With a name as prominent as Buffalo Bill, it is no surprise that collectors are always on the look out for memorabilia about the man. Buffalo Bill posters are one of the items that are most commonly sought after. Any Buffalo Bill poster will attract interest, but the price you might get, if willing to part with it, will depend on the condition, rarity, and authenticity of the poster itself. It goes without saying the of all his related posters, a Buffalo Bill Wild West Show poster will always bring in the higher dollar amount. These are growing increasingly rarer, so when someone does come across one of the market, it doesn't stay there for very long.
