Fun Facts on the Orangutan!

Close relatives to humans, the orangutan is a highly intelligent primate that is only found in Borneo and Sumatra. The word orangutan, in the Malay culture, means “person of the forest.” Orangutans have an enormous arm span, a male’s arm stretching 7 feet, which proves favorable for their lifestyle of acquiring an omnivore diet and spending up to 90 percent of their time in the trees of the tropical rain forest they call home.

These endangered primates are long-lived and have a lifespan of 30 to 40 years in the wild and up to 60 years in captivity. Grievously, due to deforestation as well as other human activities, like hunting, orangutans have been put in danger of extinction. Sharing a strong bond, infant orangutans remain with their mothers for up to 7 years or until they develop skills to survive on their own. Female orangutans only give birth once every 8 years, the longest time period of any animal, which makes it difficult for orangutans to increase their numbers and eliminate their risk of extinction.
