The United States Navy flight demonstration squadron, known as the Blue Angels, became the second oldest flying aerobatic team in the world. The ambitious crew was given life in 1946 and consisted of aviators from both the Navy and the Marines. The accredited idea that established the Blue Angels Team belongs to Admiral Chester Nimitz. In 1946, the Chief of Naval Operations had a vision to create a flight exhibition team with the objective to raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and enhance Navy morale.

Captivating the audience with precision combat maneuvers, The Blue Angels revealed themselves to the world in the 1940’s. In 1949, the team’s third commander, Lt. Cmdr. R.E. Rhodes, designed the Blue Angel’s official insignia. Originally with the aircraft heading down and to the right, the current design is in the cloud of the upper-right quadrant, changing the planes silhouettes with the team’s aircraft. Years later, in the 1950’s the team refined their demonstrations with aerobatic maneuvers and for the first time, made known the six-plane delta formation that is still flown today. In their 69 years as the Blue Angels team, the Blue Angels have flown over 10 different aircrafts.

The Navy sent its flight demonstration team into battle after the Korean war began. Re-equipped with cannon-armed F9F-2B Panthers, the courageous team formulated the essence of fighter squadron VF-191 known as “Satan’s Kittens.” Assigned to USS Princeton (CV 37). An action that has never been repeated by the Navy or the Air Force.
