Black History Month has been officially designated the month of February by every U.S. president since 1976. National African American History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. History along with a celebration of accomplishments by black Americans. Other countries around the world, including Canada, and the United Kingdom also devote a month to celebrate black history.

Gaining inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, an advocate of nonviolence. Martin Luther King Jr., a well-respected leader changed the world and helped open doors for the black community. A Baptist minister and social activist, Martin Luther King Jr. played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement from the mid 1950’s up to his assassination in 1968. King was rewarded the Noble Peace Prize in 1964 and procures the U.S. federal holiday Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
